Religious Trauma in the Experience of Queer Persons

  • HTLakeview 1218 West Addison Street Chicago United States (map)

What is religious trauma? Is it even real? Is there anything we can do when we or someone we love has been deeply wounded by the church? All are invited to join us for a conversation about religious trauma and its impact. This conversation will draw on the research of Rev. Dr. Brooke Petersen around religious trauma in the experience of queer persons, naming not just what kind of conditions might lead to religious trauma, but also what the church can do to be a place of help and not harm for those who may claim this label for themselves. We will expand on traditional views of trauma and touch on the spiritual, ritual and psychological dimensions of religious estrangement and return to faith.
